Crazy Rich Asia: Billionaires, Corruption, and Inequality in India, China and Beyond
Hinckley Institute of Politics
The hit movie Crazy Rich Asians shone a light on the conspicuous wealth now enjoyed by Asia's economic elite. But it also suggests that a continent until recently known for its inclusive growth is now showing many of the traits seen recently in the United States, from widening inequality and social division to extremes of wealth at the very top of society. James Crabtree, author of the best-selling book The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India's New Gilded Age, will discuss the rise of Asia's billionaire class in India, China and beyond — and the problems of corruption and cronyism it has brought in its wake, just as happened in America's own Gilded Age in the late 19th century.
